Malda: Union minister AH Khan Chowdhury was fired at while moving in an open jeep in the Malda district of Bengal today.
The Congressman, who is the junior minister for health at the Centre, is reported to be safe.
Mr Chowdhury is the MP from Malda South and was campaigning in Kaliachak for the panchayat elections being held in the state, when five shots were allegedly fired at him.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress, however, says the minister was not fired upon. The party tweeted: "In their desperation, the Congress in West Bengal are using their fertile imagination to concoct an incident which did not take place."
"We strongly condemn this violence which is an attack on the people and democracy, " said CPM's Brinda Karat. She also alleged that Trinamool activists were involved in rigging the polls in Burdwan district.
