Five killed during operation in Karachi's Landhi area

KARACHI: Five suspected militants were killed during an operation in Gulshan-i-Buner area of Karachi's Landhi area.

Security sources said that a police team conducted the raid after receiving a tip-off regarding the presence of hardened criminals in the vicinity.

The police team was fired upon once they entered the area.

At least five 'terrorists' were killed in retaliatory firing by security personnel, while police also claimed to have recovered a weapon factory, in addition to a large quantity of arms and ammunition.

Gunmen kill 13 bus passengers in Pakistan

QUETTA, Pakistan: Dozens of gunmen disguised in police uniforms shot to death 13 people they pulled off of a convoy of buses in southwest Pakistan and dumped their bodies in a nearby ravine, officials said Tuesday.

The motive for the attack Monday night was unclear since no one has claimed responsibility. But suspicion may fall on separatists who have been waging a low-level insurgency in southwest Baluchistan province for decades.The buses were headed to central Punjab province, and the separatists have a history of attacking Punjabis who they view as outsiders encroaching on their independence. The province is also home to many Islamic militants who have carried out attacks in the past, especially on minority Shiite Muslims.

Yemen drone strike kills four suspected Al Qaeda militants: tribal leaders

SANAA: At least four suspected Al Qaeda members were killed in a drone strike in central Yemen, local tribal leaders said on Tuesday, following a US warning of a possible major militant attack in the region.

The US State Department also ordered all non-essential staff out of Yemen and told Americans to leave the country “immediately” over terrorism concerns.

Police names three TTP suspects in Peshawar attack

PESHAWAR: Three commanders of the banned Tehrik-Taliban Pakistan were on Monday named responsible for yesterday’s car bomb attack on a convoy of the Frontier Corps in Badhber on Peshawar’s outskirts.

The case pertaining to the attack was registered in the Badhber police station. Police said Jangrez, Ghufran and Aurangzeb, all associated with the TTP, were found responsible for the attack as initial investigations into the incident went underway, adding that all three of them were said to hail from Darra Adamkhel.

Manmohan Singh condemns 'cowardly attack' on armymen in Srinagar

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday condemned the militant attack in Srinagar in which five army personnel were killed, and said the "cowardly attack" would not deter the security forces engaged in bringing peace and order to the Kashmir Valley.

Six people were injured in the attack which took place when militants opened fire on an army convoy on the outskirts of the city ahead of the prime minister's visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

Seven killed, 12 injured in Karachi blast

KARACHI: Seven people were killed and 12 others sustained injuries in a bomb explosion at Burns Road, Karachi, Express News reported on Wednesday.

Police said Sindh High Court Justice Baqar Maqbool’s convoy was the target of the attackers. They added that explosive material was planted on a motorbike.

Police and rescue personnel have reached the area and injured – including Justice Maqbool – have been shifted to nearby hospitals. The affected area has been sealed for initial investigation.

Four militants killed in attack on Kurram checkpost

PESHAWAR: Four militants were killed and two security officials were injured when militants from Afghanistan attacked the Bhitai checkpost in the Kurram tribal region near the Pak-Afghan border on Thursday.

According to official sources, militants attacked the checkpost in lower Kurram’s Shabak area at 5:30 am. The attack lasted until 7:00 am and injured two security forces personnel.

Security forces retaliated killing four militants whose bodies were shifted to a hospital.

Kurram is one of seven districts in Pakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal belt, where Taliban and Al Qaeda-linked militants have carved out strongholds used to plot attacks on Pakistani, Afghan and Western targets.

Al Qaeda says French hostage killed in Mali

Nouakchott, Mali: A French hostage has been executed in Mali, a man claiming to be a spokesman for Al Qaeda in North Africa told Mauritania's ANI news agency late on Tuesday.

A French foreign office spokesman said Paris was trying to verify the report of the killing of Philippe Verdon, who was kidnapped in November 2011, adding that "we don't know at the moment" whether it was reliable.

M. M. Alam passes away in Karachi

KARACHI: Air Commodore (retd) Mohammad Mahmood Alam passed away in Karachi this morning after a prolonged illness, DawnNews reported.

Alam, 78-years-old at the time of his death, is considered a hero of the 1965 Pakistan-India war.
