SC upset by lack of food subsidies in Balochistan

ISLAMABAD: A Supreme Court bench was flabbergasted on Tuesday when it was told that no subsidy on food items has ever been extended to the neediest segments of Balochistan since the year 2009.

This is not all. Not a single fair price shop exists outside Quetta city to ensure the delivery of wheat flour or foodgrains at affordable prices to the poorest people of the province.

Police officer killed, six injured in Quetta

QUETTA: Unknown gunmen opened indiscriminate fire on a police van in Killi Almo area of Quetta killing station house officer (SHO) of City police station and injuring six others on Thursday.

SHO Mohibullah, along with four of his children and two other policemen, had left his residence in a police van when it came under fire from unknown motorcycle-riding gunmen in Killi Almo area of Balochistan's capital city.

Bugti murder case: ATC orders authorities to produce Musharraf

QUETTA/ISLAMABAD: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Quetta on Monday ordered the authorities to produce former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf before it in a case pertaining to the murder of Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akber Khan Bugti, DawnNews reported.

During the hearing of the Bugti murder case, Balochistan’s former interior minister Aftab Khan Sherpao appeared before the ATC.

Militant commander killed in Mastung

QUETTA: A militant commander of a defunct sectarian organisation was killed in an operation conducted by security forces in Mastung district of Balochistan on Wednesday.

An intelligence official told Dawn.com on the condition of anonymity that security forces conducted an operation, which lasted for more than an hour, in Dasht area of Mastung district.

He added that two militants of the banned organisation were picked up during the operation and a huge quantity of arms and ammunition was also recovered.

Bombing in southeast Pakistan kills 2

QUETTA: An alleged suicide bomber and a civilian were killed in a explosion near a mosque in Kuchlak area of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province on Thursday.

A police officer who requested not to be named since he was not authorised to speak to media told Dawn.com that a suspected suicide bomber was carrying a suicide jacket, when killed in a mysterious blast.

"The suicide bomber was coming to Quetta to cause maximum damage, when his own suicide jacket went off", he said.

Attack on PML-N rally in Turbat kills two

QUETTA: At least two people were killed and three others were injured when gunmen opened fire on a Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) rally in Balochistan’s Turbat region on Thursday.According to police, PML-N candidate for PB-50 Mohammad Akbar Askani, who had joined the party last year, was the target, however, he survived the attack.Moreover, a wheel-jam strike was being observed against the coming polls in Baloch-dominated areas of Kalat, Mastung, Khuzdar, Turbat and Noshki.

PESHAWAR: Bomb blasts and rocket attacks targeting election candidates and polling booths continued to mar the pre-election environment on Monday.

At least sixteen people were killed and 36 others, including a candidate of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl, Maulana Ainuddin, were injured in a bomb explosion at an election meeting in Upper Kurram tribal region near the border with Afghanistan, officials said. Reuters said that 36 people were killed in the blast.

Inquiry ordered into use of childrea in bomb blasts

QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani on Tuesday constituted a judicial inquiry into the alleged involvement of 11 children in acts of terrorism.

“The judge of the BHC will conduct judicial inquiry into the issue of alleged involvement of 11 children in bomb blasts and other terrorism-related activities,” Mr Raisani said.
